Medication

Ensuring prescribed medication gets to it’s intended destination – i.e. into or on the pet – is important It is also surprisingly tricky to accomplish!

Cats in particular prove extremely difficult to medicate, especially for tablets. Dogs also have an uncanny knack of detecting a pill, even when hidden in cheese or ham! Whether it is the once monthly flea and worm treatment you struggle with, or your vet has prescribed a course of medication, I can help.

Diabetes

As a qualified veterinary nurse, I have an excellent understanding of various ongoing medical conditions. Some of these can be managed as outpatients from the veterinary practice.

I have completed several courses on the treatment and management of diabetic animals. In addition, I have the equipment necessary to measure blood glucose levels. I can create a chart which your vet can use to judge how well the prescribed insulin dose is working.

A trip to the vet can be stressful for our pets, especially cats. An unfortunate side effect of stress is increased blood glucose. A glucose curve requires and an all day stay at the vets because the samples must be taken every hour, for several hours. When a blood glucose curve is done in the pet’s own home, the result is a more accurate reflection of the true blood glucose level.

I can come to your home to create the chart and then refer the results back to your vet. Please get in touch and find out whether this might be an option for you. I am also available on 07747 771360 or carey@stneotspetcare.co.uk.

Insulin

Injecting insulin is a daunting prospect for many owners. Of course, your vet can show you how, but it’s still frightening the first time you inject alone. If your pet is newly diagnosed, I can be on hand to help you through the first few injections. Having an experienced person there will help increase your confidence with drawing up the insulin dose, charging your VetPen or injecting the required dose.

There is lots of useful information for owners of diabetic pets here (Caninsulin), here (for cats) and here (for dogs).

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure, which has been recognised as a common condition in older cats.

Feline hypertension is commonly found as a complication of other underlying medical conditions (so-called ‘secondary hypertension’), although primary hypertension (high blood pressure without any underlying disease) is also seen in cats. In contrast to people, where primary hypertension (also called essential hypertension) is most common, secondary hypertension is more common in cats.

The most common cause of secondary hypertension in cats is chronic kidney disease but other diseases can also predispose its development and there is a relationship between hypertension and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) in cats too.

Cat in Basket

Medication is available for the treatment of hypertension in cats, and requires regular monitoring. Commonly, a vet nurse appointment is necessary to check a cat’s blood pressure. Unfortunately, cat boxes and car journeys cause stress to a cat. Artificially high readings are seen on blood pressure machines when the pet is stressed. Sometimes, the high reading means that medicine doses are increased or not decreased unnecessarily. Cats are generally less stressed in their own home, so having their blood pressure taken there gives a more accurate result.

Please note:  St. Neots Pet Care is staffed by a Veterinary Nurse, NOT a Veterinary Surgeon so you will need to be registered with a veterinary practice. I cannot legally diagnose illness nor prescribe or dispense medication. This is an outpatient service, any medications will need to be clearly labelled with patient name and dosage. All medicines must be provided by the client’s vet.
